How to Prepare Your Car for a Professional Detail

By Jordan Vale · Editorial sample author · Updated October 1, 2026

A professional detail starts before the first wash. A few simple preparation steps can make intake clearer and help the detailer focus on the surfaces that matter most.

1. Remove personal items

Clear loose belongings from seats, cupholders, door pockets and the cargo area. This makes it easier to inspect the cabin and reduces the chance of personal items being moved during service.

2. Identify the problem areas

Make a short list of the stains, odors, paint defects or contamination you care about most. Photos help a detailer understand the condition before the appointment.

3. Be clear about the desired outcome

“Make it perfect” is hard to scope. “Improve visible swirl marks in direct light” or “reset the rear seats after pet use” gives the service provider a more concrete target.

4. Ask what is included

Package names vary. Review the line items for interior cleaning, decontamination, polishing and protection so you know what the selected service actually covers.

5. Plan the handover

Confirm where the vehicle will be serviced, how keys are transferred, any access limitations and what happens if the actual condition changes the scope.

The checklist format makes it much easier to understand what should be discussed before an appointment.

I would also take a few condition photos before handover so both sides have the same reference point.
